Overview

Ilisara contains many unusual materials. The following is a reference catalogue of the most notable rare materials, organized by type.

Metals and Alloys
  • Aetherium — A lunar metal originating from the moon Lunarcha. It amplifies and distorts magic in its vicinity. On Ilisara, it enhances spellcraft in strange and unpredictable ways. Witch covens prize it for rituals. It is extraordinarily rare and cannot be mined on the planet's surface.

  • Demonsteel — Pressure-forged deep in the volcanic heart of the Sunken World. Demonsteel's extreme heat forging process makes it denser and harder than ordinary steel. It is not easily replicated outside the Sunken World's conditions.

  • Oakensteel — A masterfully crafted silver alloy imbued with druidic magic. Oakensteel weapons carry a connection to the natural world, and skilled wielders can use them to command plant life. The material's origins are unclear, but it is associated with the Weald tradition.

  • Silver — Common enough to be traded but rare enough to matter. Silver weapons deal double damage to lycanthropes. Silver arrowheads are a staple of hunters who operate in Beruna and Aldemere's wilderness.

Woods
  • Livewood — A magically living wood found in the forests of Oros and Aldemere. Livewood is self-healing and never requires maintenance or repair. Orosian ships are built with livewood hulls and crewed by druids who can command the material in combat. The dryad figurehead on every Orosian ship is made of livewood. Creatures that know what livewood is tend to steer clear of vessels made from it.

  • Magewood — A lesser magical wood that absorbs magic from leylines with its roots. Magewood is harvested in small quantities from particularly old and magically saturated forests.

  • Redwood — A greater magical wood that can only be harvested from Fleur du Lionne's sole Redwood forest. Fiercely protected by the wood elves who live among the Redwoods' treetops. This wood contains the souls of nature spirits who Remedia spared from reincarnating.

Hides and Leathers
  • Dragonhide — The scaled hide of a dragon, harvested after death. Dragonhide armor is extraordinarily durable and carries residual magical properties depending on the dragon's type.

  • Chimera Scale — Harvested from chimeras, these serpentine scales are tough and magically resilient. They are commonly sewn into leather armor by skilled Isles craftsmen, providing protection far exceeding what ordinary leather could offer.

  • Banshee Hide — A rare black leather with white streaks, harvested from banshees or creatures with similar properties. Armor made from banshee hide is lightweight and unnervingly beautiful. Prolonged wear is said to slowly bleach the hair of the wearer, though the effect is not permanent.

  • Ettin Leather — Thick, durable leather harvested from ettins. It is charcoal-dark and heavy, used as backing for high-quality ringmail. Ettin leather is notably more resistant to blunt trauma than ordinary hide.

  • Rhokanta Hide — Harvested from the armored rhino of Okuna, rhokanta hide is tough and heat-resistant, well-suited to desert environments. Okunan tribes use it for armor and clothing.

  • Sealskin — A waterproof hide common in Anash'col. Properly treated sealskin repels water entirely, no matter the conditions. It is widely used for boots, cloaks, and other outerwear in the frozen north.

Oils and Extracts
  • Frost Chimera Extract — Harvested from frost chimeras, this extract is refined into a weapon oil that protects blades from extreme heat, lava, and fire damage. It is one of the only substances that allows ordinary weapons to be used safely against fire elementals without degradation.

  • Verdant Weapon Oil — A bright green oil of druidic origin, distilled from concentrated herbs. Applying it to a weapon enhances accuracy for a full day.

  • Dragon Fire Extract — The raw glandular secretion of a fire-breathing dragon, which carries an intense spicy heat. When refined and mixed into wine, it produces Firewine, a specialty drink produced in Aldemere. In its raw form, it is a potent alchemical ingredient.

Okunan Desert Treasures
  • Okunan Desert Minerals — A category of rare minerals found only in Okuna's haunted desert, mixed into its salt-heavy sands. They are linked to the decayed body of the ancient water spirit Devondalevi. Clay made from soil near Devondalevi's bones carries potent magical properties and is used in Okunan ritual bowls, jars, and shamanistic implements.

  • Cobalt — A vivid blue mineral found mixed into Okuna's desert sands, deposited there when debris rained from the sky during Aeon's Demise. When refined and combined with aluminum and other additives, cobalt produces azure dye — one of Okuna's most valuable exports. An'mani's demand for the dye keeps Okunan tribes well supplied with trade goods in return.

  • Oyogba Quartz — A rare mineral found deep in Okuna's desert. Its precise properties are not widely documented, though Okunan shamans prize it for grey magic rituals.

  • Striped Sandstone — A distinctive banded stone found throughout Okuna, formed during the planet's earliest age when the continent was created by falling debris. Its unusual layered coloring makes it a sought-after decorative material.

  • Lapis Lazuli — Found in the Okunan desert. Enterprising citizens hunt for Lapis Lazuli, as it is prized more than diamonds and gold in An'mani.

Ocean Materials
  • Deepsea Pearls — Harvested from giant clams that cluster around the geothermal vents near the Citadel of Ten Thousand Pearls. The warm upwellings of the vents create ideal conditions for clam colonies, and merfolk have farmed pearls from them for centuries. Deepsea pearls are larger and more lustrous than surface-water pearls.

  • Floatstone — A naturally buoyant stone found on the ocean floor near the Veil. The Citadel of Ten Thousand Pearls has surrounding gardens and mermaid breeding caverns built atop floatstone platforms chained to the seabed, allowing them to absorb seismic activity without structural damage. Floatstone is rare and extraordinarily difficult to harvest at depth, as it crumbles in low-pressure environments.

Shirian Lotus
  • Red Lotus — The most common variety. Dried red petals produce a mild high when smoked or chewed. Larger quantities cause hallucinations and lead to a long, deep sleep. The standard recreational lotus used in Rashirum.

  • Blue Lotus — A calming variety used in religious ceremony and meditation. Blue lotus produces a dreamy, euphoric state and heightens spiritual perception.

  • Black Lotus — The most dangerous common variety. Ground black lotus is used as a poison that causes terrifying hallucinations. Even in recreational quantities it produces deeply unsettling experiences.

  • Death Lotus — An extremely rare and lethal variety. Even a small amount is fatal if ingested without careful preparation. Assassins prize it. It has no recreational use.

  • Blood Lotus — A lotus variety that has been grown in soil saturated with blood magic. Its petals carry residual sanguimantic properties and are used as a reagent in blood magic rituals. Consuming it raw causes internal hemorrhaging.

  • White Lotus — The rarest and most potent variety. White lotus petals are the calling card of the Lotus Eaters, a cult that uses the flower in their rituals. A single petal induces a state of profound bliss and total disconnection from reality. Prolonged use is said to permanently alter a person's relationship with consciousness.

Poisons and Toxic Reagents
  • Thassil Root — A plant root that when ground into powder becomes a flavorless blue sedative. It dissolves completely in food or drink, making it undetectable. Used by assassins and alchemists alike.

  • Spiderbite Venom — Harvested from venomous spiders found in humid climates. The raw venom mimics the sensation of dozens of bites spreading from the extremities inward. Refined for use as a torture agent or injectable poison.

  • Stormclaw Scorpion Venom — The purple-black venom of the Stormclaw Scorpion, found in arid desert regions. A powerful paralytic in its raw form. Refined venom is used in needle and blowdart applications.

  • Carrion Ichor — A foul substance secreted by carrion-feeding creatures. Raw ichor causes severe skin rot and disease on contact. In large quantities it is lethal. Refined into a smearable poison by alchemists.

  • Midnight Tears — A rare plant extract with a unique delayed activation property. When refined into a consumable poison, its effects do not manifest until midnight, regardless of when it was ingested.

  • Ascerbic Spores — Dried spores harvested from a toxic fungus. When burned or released into the air they cause respiratory damage and poison the bloodstream. Damage dealt by ascerbic spores resists healing until the exposure ends.

  • Aggerivic Root — A plant whose fumes when burned cause immediate paralysis. Used by alchemists to produce inhaled paralytic agents.

  • Dreamleaf — A soft-leaved plant with powerful sedative properties when its oils are extracted and aerosolized. Raw dreamleaf is harmless. Refined dreamleaf essence is a fast-acting inhaled sedative.

  • Veridian Herb — A common herb used as the base for basic weapon coatings. When refined into a poison oil and applied to a blade, it causes additional tissue damage on contact. Loses potency quickly once applied.

Other
  • Kog'sumoth's Ivory — The teeth and jawbone of the kraken Kog'sumoth, harvested after they were taken as war trophies. Kog'sumoth's jawbone is fashioned into the hull of Hejong's ship Hejong's Wrath, providing natural armor. His teeth form a lattice of ivory plating across the vessel.

  • Spirit-Ink — A liquid produced by certain spirits, most notably Spectres. It is always wet and cannot dry. When a stamp or seal soaked in spirit-ink is pressed into mortal skin, it leaves a mark with a magical effect determined by the seal's symbol.
